WHOSE NEED IS GREATER?

Sir Philip Sidney was a brave general. He was known for his high sense of self-sacrifice.

Once, badly wounded in a battle, Sidney was carried out of the battlefield. He asked for water, which was immediately brought. But as the general raised the glass to his thirsty lips, a wounded soldier, looking longingly at it, cried out, “Oh! I’m dying of thirst.”

The general was moved to pity. He handed the glass of water to the soldier saying “Your need is greater than mine.”

Moral: Self-sacrifice is a sign of greatness.
